athena
peace of mind, invisbly

How do our experiences shape our feelings towards objects?
The athena project explores how unique experiences influence our perceptions and feelings about objects. Security isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept; it encompasses more than fortified walls or surveillance cameras. It is a deeply personal experience influenced by our identities, histories, and environments. Safety is inherently subjective, a complex interplay of physical security and emotional well-being. For many women, safety is an ever-present concern influenced by harassment and the fear of being watched. Moreover, these feelings are not unique to women; marginalized groups often have distinct perspectives shaped by their interactions with police and authority figures. For them, surveillance technologies could evoke vulnerability rather than safety, and home cameras may contribute to discomfort, even within their own homes.

Inspired by the soothing designs of wellness products, the design approach for the products adopts softer, more familiar shapes, fostering feelings of comfort rather than intrusion. By blending into the home environment, they aim to change the emotional response to the product, prioritizing both safety and peace of mind. From feeling watched to feeling safe by using familiar shapes and materials connected to wellness & relaxation.

The design is an approach to a more inclusive safety concept. It balances protection and privacy with an unobtrusive design, ensuring peace of mind without the loss of personal space. athena features soft, rounded shapes that invite touch and evoke gentle reassurance. Whether through a welcoming glow or quiet presence during sleep, athena acts as a guardian, seamlessly woven into everyday life.
